Veritas is proud to announce that brandy will be introduced from 2010 as part of the biggest wine competition in South Africa. This unanimous decision to include brandy was taken earlier this year by the SA National Wine Show Association (SANWSA), the presenter of Veritas.
South Africa is increasingly renowned for our exceptional standard and potstill brandy which can compete with the finest in the world. It is especially appropriate that brandy is included during Veritas’s 20th anniversary year. Mr Riaan Marais, Chairperson of the SA Brandy Foundation, welcomed this step and said that it will contribute to the high regard of quality brandy in South Africa.
Razvan Macici, cellar master of Nederburg that has won several awards at Veritas, summarises the wine industry’s opinion of this competition: “For a South African wine maker to win a double gold at Veritas is equal to winning an Oscar.”
Specialist panels will taste and evaluate the participating wines and brandies from 13 – 20 September at the Nederburg Auction Complex according to stringent international guidelines. South African master of port, Carel Nel of Boplaas Family Vineyards has won numerous awards at Veritas and feels that this is one of the competition’s strengths. “The use of specialist panels is especially significant and reassuring because no judge can be an expert on all different wine styles and cultivars,” he explains. The competition’s strict and professional approach to the judging process ensures consistent results which give a true reflection of quality.
This year’s victorious wines will be announced during a gala dinner on 8 October at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
